Irresistible Cream Cheese Mints: Your Easiest Homemade Holiday Candy
Prepare to fall in love with Cream Cheese Mints, quite possibly the easiest and most delightful holiday candy you can ever make. These delicate, melt-in-your-mouth confections boast a refreshing minty flavor that no one can resist. With their smooth, creamy texture, they truly live up to their reputation as a treat that instantly dissolves on your tongue, leaving behind a delightful burst of peppermint.

The Simple Magic: Just 4 Ingredients
What makes these Cream Cheese Mints truly spectacular is their incredible simplicity. You only need a handful of staple ingredients, making them a budget-friendly and stress-free option for homemade candy. Gather these four essential items, and you’re well on your way to a batch of heavenly mints:
- Cream Cheese: Opt for full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature, to achieve that signature creamy, rich texture.
- Butter: Unsalted butter, also softened, is preferred as it allows you to control the overall sweetness and flavor profile of your mints.
- Powdered Sugar: Also known as confectioners’ sugar, this ingredient is crucial for both sweetness and structure. Sifting it before use ensures a smooth, lump-free mixture.
- Peppermint Extract: This provides the signature refreshing flavor. The quality of your extract can significantly impact the taste, so choose a good one!
These core ingredients combine to create a remarkably versatile base, ready for your creative touches.
A Treat for Every Occasion: How to Serve and Decorate
While often associated with Christmas due to their vibrant, festive colors, Cream Cheese Mints are truly a candy for all seasons and celebrations. Their elegant appearance and delightful taste make them suitable for almost any event.
To enhance their visual appeal, I often incorporate a few drops of food coloring. This simple step can transform your mints into a seasonal delight:
- Christmas: Use red and green food coloring for a classic festive look.
- Easter: Pastel shades like light pink, baby blue, yellow, and lavender are perfect for springtime gatherings.
- Valentine’s Day: Deep red or soft pink mints convey a sweet message.
- Weddings & Showers: Match the mints to the event’s color scheme – soft whites, creams, or colors that complement the decor make beautiful, personalized favors.
- Birthdays & Other Parties: Coordinate colors with the party theme, or simply make them in natural white for a classic touch.
However, adding food coloring is completely optional. Cream Cheese Mints are equally beautiful in their natural, creamy white hue, offering a sophisticated and pure look that is always in style. Present them on decorative trays, in small cupcake liners, or individual candy boxes for a thoughtful homemade gift.

Mastering the Art of Shaping Cream Cheese Mints
Shaping these delicate mints is part of the fun and allows for various presentations. While the mixture is indeed quite thick, yielding a delightful forearm workout, the results are always worth the effort. Here are a couple of popular methods:
Using a Pastry Bag for Elegant Designs
My preferred method for shaping Cream Cheese Mints is using a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip. This technique allows for beautiful, uniform swirls that give the mints a professional, confectionery shop appearance. For best results:
- Tip Selection: A Wilton 1M or 2D large star tip works wonderfully for creating classic rosette shapes. Experiment with other decorative tips for varied designs.
- Filling the Bag: Fill the pastry bag about halfway to two-thirds full to maintain control and reduce strain. Twist the top to seal.
- Piping Technique: Hold the bag perpendicular to the parchment-lined baking sheet, applying even pressure to pipe small, consistent swirls or stars. Release pressure quickly to create a clean break.
- Managing Thickness: Because the mixture is thick, you might need to use both hands to squeeze the bag, especially as you get towards the end of the batch. Take breaks if needed!
Simple Hand-Shaping Techniques
If you don’t have a pastry bag or prefer a more rustic, classic look, hand-shaping is an excellent alternative:
- Small Balls: Roll the mixture into small, uniform balls, about ½ to ¾ inch in diameter.
- Fork Press: Place each ball on parchment paper and gently press it flat with the tines of a fork, creating a charming cross-hatch pattern on top. This not only looks appealing but also helps with quicker setting.
- Other Simple Shapes: You can also roll the dough into small logs and slice them, or use tiny cookie cutters (lightly floured with powdered sugar) for festive shapes.

Storage and Shelf Life: Keeping Your Mints Fresh
One of the many advantages of Cream Cheese Mints is their excellent shelf life, making them ideal for preparing ahead of time for parties or as gifts. Proper storage is key to maintaining their delicate texture and fresh flavor.
- Refrigeration: Once shaped and set, store your Cream Cheese Mints in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will remain fresh and delicious for up to one week. Be sure to layer them with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Freezing for Longer Storage: For extended freshness, Cream Cheese Mints freeze beautifully. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until firm (about 1-2 hours). Once hardened, transfer them to an airtight, freezer-safe container or bag, again layering with parchment paper. They can be frozen for several months.
- Thawing: To enjoy frozen mints, simply transfer them from the freezer to the refrigerator a few hours before serving, or let them sit at room temperature for about 15-30 minutes.
These storage tips ensure you can always have a delightful batch of these refreshing treats on hand whenever the craving strikes!
Why You’ll Love Making These Homemade Mints
Beyond their irresistible taste and elegant appearance, there are countless reasons to adore making Cream Cheese Mints:
- Effortless Elegance: Despite their sophisticated look, they are incredibly simple to make, even for novice bakers.
- Customization King: Easily adapt the color and flavor (try almond or vanilla extract!) to suit any theme or personal preference.
- Perfect Portion Control: Their small, delicate size makes them a perfect little indulgence. You can enjoy one or two to satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling like you’ve over-indulged.
- Wonderful for Gifting: Homemade mints make heartfelt gifts during the holidays or for special occasions. Package them in small decorative boxes or cellophane bags.
- Family Fun: Involve children in the shaping process (especially the fork method!) for a fun, interactive kitchen activity.
These mints are not just candy; they are a delightful experience, bringing joy and a touch of homemade charm to any table.

Cream Cheese Mints Recipe
By Christin Mahrlig

Ingredients
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese,, softened to room temperature
- 2 tablespoons butter,, unsalted and softened
- 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 7 cups powdered sugar,, sifted to prevent lumps
- 3 to 4 drops food coloring,, gel food coloring for best results, optional
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and butter. Using an electric mixer, beat them together on medium speed until the mixture is light, fluffy, and completely smooth, with no lumps remaining.
-
Add the peppermint extract to the cream cheese and butter mixture. Beat again on low speed until the extract is thoroughly incorporated and the delightful minty aroma fills your kitchen.
-
Gradually add the first cup of sifted powdered sugar to the mixture. Beat on low speed until it is fully incorporated and the mixture starts to thicken.
-
Continue adding the remaining powdered sugar, about 2 cups at a time, beating on low speed after each addition until thoroughly combined. The mixture will become very thick and form a stiff dough-like consistency. It’s important to add the sugar gradually to ensure a smooth texture.
-
If using food coloring, add 3-4 drops (or more, to achieve your desired shade) to the mixture and beat until the color is evenly distributed throughout the dough. For multiple colors, divide the dough before adding color to each portion.
-
Transfer the stiff mint mixture into a sturdy pastry bag fitted with a large star tip (such as a Wilton 1M or 2D).
-
Pipe small, uniform swirls, stars, or rosettes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Leave a little space between each mint. Alternatively, roll into small balls and press with a fork for a classic look.
-
Allow the piped mints to sit on the counter for at least 1 hour to slightly dry and set. This helps them hold their shape. Afterward, transfer the baking sheet to the freezer for an additional hour to fully harden and make them easier to handle.
