My love affair with the crockpot has revealed a vast world of possibilities beyond traditional stews and pulled pork. The slow cooker is incredibly versatile, capable of producing an impressive array of dishes, from savory main courses to delightful desserts. Some of my personal favorites include: lasagna, mac and cheese, peach cobbler, green bean casserole, and beer brats. Adding creamy mashed potatoes to this list further solidifies the slow cooker’s status as a kitchen essential, especially when entertaining.
The Secret to Effortless Creamy Crockpot Mashed Potatoes
This Crockpot Mashed Potatoes recipe is remarkably simple and incredibly convenient, designed to streamline your cooking process without sacrificing flavor or texture. What makes it truly unique is that you don’t even need to drain the potatoes after they’ve finished cooking. Instead, they are mashed directly in their flavorful cooking liquid. When I first encountered this method, I admit I was skeptical. Wouldn’t the potatoes turn out watery and bland?
To my pleasant surprise, they did not. The magic lies in the precise amount of liquid and the addition of rich ingredients. With a generous stick of butter and a dollop of sour cream incorporated right into the pot, you’re left with an incredibly creamy, rich, and thick mashed potato dish that defies all initial doubts. The potatoes absorb just the right amount of liquid, leaving them perfectly tender and imbued with flavor. This technique is a revelation, ensuring maximum flavor with minimum fuss.
The most demanding step in this entire recipe is undoubtedly peeling and uniformly slicing the potatoes into 1/4-inch rounds. If you’re anything like me, potato peeling can feel like a chore, especially when the vegetable peeler plays hide-and-seek in the kitchen drawers! However, this initial effort is well worth it, as consistent slicing ensures that all the potatoes cook evenly and become perfectly tender simultaneously in the slow cooker.

How To Make The Best Crockpot Mashed Potatoes: Step-by-Step
Making these glorious mashed potatoes is simpler than you might think. Here’s a breakdown of the process to achieve that perfect, creamy texture.
First, prepare your potatoes. After peeling, slice them into uniform 1/4-inch rounds. This ensures even cooking. Arrange the potato slices neatly in your slow cooker. In a separate saucepan, bring a mixture of water, chicken broth, and salt to a rolling boil. Once boiling, carefully pour this hot liquid over the potatoes in the crockpot. Stir gently to ensure all potato slices are coated.
To prevent any discoloration or drying of the top layer of potatoes during the slow cooking process, brush the exposed surfaces with a generous amount of melted butter. Then, press a piece of parchment paper, slightly larger than the crockpot’s opening, directly onto the potatoes, tucking the edges down to hold it securely in place. While some minimal discoloration might still occur, it will be completely unnoticeable once the potatoes are mashed, and this step significantly helps maintain moisture and even cooking.

After approximately 4 hours of cooking on the HIGH setting in your crockpot, the potatoes will reach a state of absolute tenderness, easily pierced with a fork. At this point, remove the parchment paper. It’s time for the magic of mashing! Using a sturdy potato masher, mash the potatoes right in the pot, incorporating the remaining cooking liquid. Once they reach your desired consistency, add the pre-cut pieces of butter, sour cream, fresh chives, and your chosen seasonings. Stir thoroughly to combine all the delicious flavors until everything is smooth and perfectly creamy.

Expert Tip: For Flawless Holiday Serving
One of the greatest advantages of making mashed potatoes in a slow cooker, especially for holiday feasts or large family meals, is their incredible “holdability.” Once you’ve mashed them to perfection and stirred in all the delicious additions, you can simply switch your crockpot to the “warm” setting. The mashed potatoes will stay hot and ready to serve for an hour or even two without drying out or losing their creamy texture. This feature is particularly helpful when juggling multiple dishes or waiting for everyone to gather at the table, a common scenario in many households with eager, yet sometimes delayed, diners!
Storage and Reheating Crockpot Mashed Potatoes
Should you be lucky enough to have any leftovers of these delectable mashed potatoes, they store beautifully. Simply transfer them to an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, if they’ve become a bit too thick from chilling, mix in a splash of milk or cream to restore their luscious consistency. Reheat them gently in the microwave or on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally. To elevate the flavor of your reheated mashed potatoes, consider sprinkling them with a little shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon – a simple trick to create a whole new taste experience.

Crockpot Mashed Potatoes
By Christin Mahrlig
Equipment
-
6-quart slow cooker
-
Potato Masher
Ingredients
- 5 pounds russet potatoes
- 2 cups water
- 3/4 cup chicken broth, (can use all water)
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons salted butter, (melted)
- 1 stick butter, (cut into 1 tablespoon size pieces)
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons minced chives
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon ground pepper
Instructions
-
Bring water, broth, and salt to boil in a small saucepan.
-
While the liquid is coming to a boil, peel and slice the potatoes into 1/4-inch rounds. If the water boils before you are done, simply reduce the heat to low. It’s important to minimize the potatoes’ exposure to air once peeled to prevent them from turning brown.
-
Place the potato slices evenly in the crockpot and pour the boiling water mixture over them. Stir gently to ensure all potatoes are well coated with the liquid.
-
Brush the top layer of potatoes with the melted butter. Then, place a piece of parchment paper, slightly larger than the crockpot’s interior, directly on top of the potatoes. Tuck the edges down firmly to hold it in place. This helps to prevent drying and discoloration.
-
Cover the crockpot with its lid and cook on the HIGH setting until all the potatoes are perfectly tender, which typically takes about 4 hours.
-
Once cooked, discard the parchment paper. Sprinkle the pre-cut butter pieces on top of the hot potatoes. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes directly in the pot until they reach your desired smooth consistency.
-
Finally, mix in the sour cream, minced chives, garlic powder, and ground pepper. Taste for seasoning and add any extra salt if needed to suit your preference. Serve warm and enjoy!
