Why This Pulled Pork BBQ Pizza Will Be Your New Favorite
The allure of BBQ pizza lies in its unique flavor profile, setting it apart from its traditional counterparts. Unlike conventional pizzas that rely on marinara or tomato sauce, a good quality barbecue sauce provides a foundation that is at once sweet, tangy, and subtly smoky. This distinctive base pairs exceptionally well with the richness of tender pulled pork, creating a taste sensation that’s both familiar and exhilarating. For many, including my own family, the shift from tomato-based sauces to BBQ sauce on pizza has been a revelation, opening up a world of new flavor combinations and making pizza night even more exciting.
This recipe embraces simplicity without sacrificing an ounce of flavor. We’ll be utilizing readily available ingredients like store-bought BBQ sauce, and you can easily opt for pre-made pizza dough to save valuable time, especially on busy weeknights. The combination of succulent pulled pork, salty and crispy bacon, thinly sliced red onion for a touch of zest and crunch, fresh Roma tomatoes for a burst of bright acidity, and a generous blend of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses creates a harmonious tapestry of textures and tastes. A final flourish of fresh cilantro and green onions brightens the entire dish, adding an aromatic freshness that elevates it from merely good to truly unforgettable. It’s a complete meal packed with vibrant Southern-inspired flavors.

Making the Most of Leftover Pulled Pork: A Culinary Gem
Pulled pork is truly one of the most versatile ingredients for smart meal prepping. Its tender, flavorful nature makes it ideal for a multitude of dishes, and pizza is undoubtedly one of its most delicious applications. The inherent beauty of this recipe is that it allows you to transform your leftovers into something entirely new and exciting, ensuring you never feel like you’re simply reheating old food. This approach is particularly appealing for families where “leftovers” can sometimes be a hard sell! By reimagining the pork as a star topping on a delicious, handcrafted pizza, you’re serving up a fresh and exciting meal that everyone will eagerly enjoy, creating new memories around the dinner table.
Whether your pulled pork comes from a slow cooker that simmered all day, a smoker that imparted deep, complex flavors, or even a convenient store-bought pre-cooked package, it provides a robust and satisfying base for this exceptional pizza. If your leftover pork happens to be un-sauced, a valuable tip is to consider tossing it with a little extra BBQ sauce before adding it to the pizza. This simple step ensures every bite is bursting with the intended flavor and adds an extra layer of moisture, preventing the pork from drying out during the baking process. This thoughtful preparation guarantees a consistently delicious result that will have everyone asking for seconds.

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect BBQ Pizza
Crafting this pizza is all about balancing key flavors and textures to achieve a harmonious culinary experience. While we provide suggested quantities for each ingredient, remember that pizza is inherently customizable. Feel free to adjust the amounts of sauce, toppings, and cheese to perfectly match your personal preferences and the tastes of your family. The best pizza is always the one you enjoy most, tailored precisely to your liking!
The Foundation: Dough and Flavorful Sauce
- Pizza Dough: A 1-pound ball of good quality pizza dough forms the base of our creation. Using store-bought dough makes this recipe incredibly fast and convenient for busy evenings. For those who enjoy a more artisanal touch, preparing your own homemade dough in advance is a rewarding option. Regardless of your choice, ensure your dough is at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before you begin stretching it, as this makes it much more pliable and easier to handle.
- BBQ Sauce: Approximately 1/2 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce will form the tangy, sweet, and smoky base for this pizza. This is where you can truly personalize the flavor profile. Experiment with different brands, from a classic sweet and smoky to a spicier or vinegar-based variety. Each will impart its own unique character to the pizza, so choose one you genuinely love. You can always add a little more or less depending on how saucy you prefer your pizza.
The Star Toppings: Rich and Savory Additions
- Pulled Pork: About 1 cup of tender, shredded pulled pork is the undisputed heart of this pizza. As mentioned, if your pork is plain or unsauced, a crucial tip is to mix it with a tablespoon or two of extra BBQ sauce before spreading it on the pizza. This ensures every bite of pork is juicy and bursting with flavor, preventing it from drying out in the oven.
- Bacon: 2-3 pieces of cooked and crumbled bacon are essential. The crispy, salty bits of bacon add a delightful texture and a layer of savory depth that perfectly complements the sweet and smoky BBQ flavors. Ensure it’s cooked until crisp before crumbling.
- Red Onion: Half a red onion, thinly sliced, provides a sharp, fresh counterpoint to the richness of the pork and cheese. When baked, the red onion mellows slightly, offering a subtle sweetness and a pleasant textural crunch without being overpowering.
- Roma Tomatoes: Two Roma tomatoes, thinly sliced, contribute a burst of freshness and a slight acidity. Their vibrant color and juicy texture add another dimension to the pizza, cutting through the richness beautifully.
The Melted Goodness: Cheese for Creaminess and Flavor
- Shredded Cheese: You’ll need about 2 cups of shredded cheese. A classic blend of cheddar and mozzarella offers both sharp, familiar flavor and excellent meltability, creating that irresistible gooey texture. For those looking to experiment, Monterey Jack, provolone, or even smoked gouda are also fantastic choices for varying flavor profiles, each adding its own unique character to the finished pizza.
Fresh Finishers: Brightness and Aroma
- Green Onions: 2 sliced green onions add a mild, fresh onion flavor and a vibrant pop of color. They contribute a gentle pungency that complements the other ingredients without being too strong.
- Fresh Cilantro: 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh cilantro provide a bright, herbaceous, and refreshing note that perfectly balances the rich, savory toppings. Its distinctive flavor is a hallmark of many Southern and Southwestern dishes and truly brings this pizza to life.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Perfect BBQ Pizza
Creating this delicious Southern BBQ Pizza is a straightforward and enjoyable process, especially with your pulled pork already prepared. Follow these detailed steps for a perfectly baked, incredibly flavorful pizza every single time.

- Preheat Your Oven and Pizza Stone: For the crispiest crust reminiscent of a professional pizzeria, place a baking stone (if you have one) in your oven. Then, preheat the oven to 500°F (or the highest temperature your oven can safely reach). Allowing the stone to heat up thoroughly for at least 30-60 minutes ensures even cooking and a beautifully charred crust. If you don’t have a pizza stone, a regular greased baking sheet will also work well; just assemble the pizza directly on it.
- Prepare the Pizza Dough: If you’re using store-bought dough, ensure it has come to room temperature for at least 30 minutes. This crucial step makes the dough much more elastic and easier to stretch without tearing. Divide the dough in half if you intend to make two smaller pizzas, or use the whole pound for one large, generous pizza. On a lightly floured or cornmeal-dusted surface, gently stretch or roll the dough to your desired thickness and shape. A thin crust will be crispier, while a thicker crust offers more chew.
- Transfer Dough to Paddle/Sheet: Once your dough is stretched, carefully place it onto a pizza paddle that has been generously coated with cornmeal or flour. The cornmeal acts like tiny ball bearings, preventing the dough from sticking. Give the paddle a gentle shake to verify that the pizza is not clinging to it; this is crucial for a smooth transfer to the hot stone later. If using a baking sheet, you can assemble the pizza directly on the greased sheet at this stage.
- Apply the BBQ Sauce Base: Spoon your desired amount of BBQ sauce onto the pizza dough, spreading it evenly across the surface. Remember to leave a small border around the edges for the crust to form. Don’t be shy if you love a saucy pizza, but also be careful not to overload it, which could lead to a soggy crust.
- Layer Your Delicious Toppings: Evenly distribute the tender pulled pork, crispy crumbled bacon, thinly sliced red onion, and fresh Roma tomato slices over the BBQ sauce. As a reminder, if your pulled pork is unsauced, mixing it with a little extra BBQ sauce beforehand will significantly enhance its flavor and moisture content.
- Sprinkle with Cheese: Now, generously sprinkle your chosen shredded cheese blend over all the toppings. This creates a luscious, melted layer that binds all the incredible flavors together, forming a golden, bubbly top.
- Add Optional Fresh Herbs: While you can sprinkle the fresh green onions and cilantro after baking, adding them before can allow their flavors to slightly meld with the other ingredients, especially the green onions, infusing the pizza with an extra layer of aroma.
- Bake to Perfection: Carefully slide the pizza from the paddle onto the preheated pizza stone in the oven. If using a baking sheet, simply place it directly into the hot oven. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep a close eye on your pizza; it’s ready when the crust is beautifully golden brown, and the cheese is bubbly, melted, and lightly browned to perfection.
- Repeat for Second Pizza: If you divided your dough to make two pizzas, repeat the entire process for the second one, ensuring a continuous flow of deliciousness.

Expert Tips for the Best Southern BBQ Pizza Experience
Achieving a truly outstanding Southern BBQ Pizza isn’t just about the ingredients; it’s also about technique. Here are some expert tips to ensure your homemade pizza is nothing short of perfect every time:
- Room Temperature Dough is Key: This cannot be overstated. Always allow your pizza dough to come to room temperature for at least 30-60 minutes before attempting to stretch it. Cold dough is stiff, inelastic, and prone to snapping back or tearing. If you encounter resistance while stretching, let it rest for another 5 minutes, allowing the gluten to relax, and then try again. Patience here will yield a beautifully shaped crust.
- Avoid Overloading Your Pizza: While it’s tempting to pile on every delicious topping, too much can lead to a soggy crust, uneven baking, and a pizza that’s difficult to slice and eat. A balanced approach ensures every ingredient shines without overwhelming the pizza or compromising its structural integrity.
- Hot Oven, Crispy Crust: The high temperature (500°F or higher) is absolutely crucial for a quick bake and the development of a crispy, chewy crust with a slight char, much like pizzas from a wood-fired oven. A preheated pizza stone or steel significantly aids in achieving that professional-style crispness on the bottom of your crust.
- Pre-Cooked Bacon for Best Results: Always ensure your bacon is cooked until crispy and then crumbled before adding it to the pizza. This prevents it from making the pizza greasy, ensures a pleasant texture, and guarantees its delicious smoky flavor is fully developed.
- Customize Your Sauce: BBQ sauces come in a wide range of flavors – sweet, spicy, smoky, tangy, or a blend of them all. Choose one that best suits your palate and complements the richness of the pulled pork. You can even mix two different sauces for a unique, personalized blend.
- Fresh Herbs for a Bright Finish: For maximum freshness, vibrant color, and aromatic punch, consider adding the chopped fresh cilantro and sliced green onions immediately after the pizza comes out of the oven. The residual heat will slightly warm them, releasing their essential oils without cooking them down too much, preserving their bright flavors.
Delicious Variations and Customizations to Try
This Southern BBQ Pizza recipe is a fantastic starting point, but don’t hesitate to get creative and make it truly your own! Pizza is one of the most versatile dishes, inviting endless possibilities for customization. Here are a few inspiring ideas to elevate your next pizza night:
- Spicy Kick: If you love heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to your BBQ sauce before spreading it, or sprinkle fresh sliced jalapeños or serrano peppers on top of the pizza before baking. A generous drizzle of your favorite hot sauce or a dash of chipotle powder after baking can also add a delightful, smoky heat.
- Sweet & Savory Twist: A handful of pineapple chunks can bring a surprising tropical sweetness that beautifully complements the smoky pulled pork and tangy BBQ sauce. Don’t knock it till you try it!
- Cheese Exploration: Beyond the classic cheddar and mozzarella, expand your cheese horizons. Try smoked gouda for an extra layer of smoky depth, pepper jack for a mild spicy kick, or provolone and fontina for different textural and flavor profiles. A blend of three or even four cheeses can create a truly complex and irresistible topping.
- Vegetable Boost: Enhance the nutritional value and flavor with additional vegetables. Bell peppers (red, yellow, or green), corn kernels, caramelized onions, or even sautéed mushrooms can be wonderful additions, adding extra color, crunch, and sweetness that harmonize with the BBQ theme.
- Herb Alternatives: If cilantro isn’t your favorite, or you’re looking for a different aromatic twist, fresh parsley, chopped chives, or even a sprinkle of dried oregano can offer a similar fresh, herbaceous finish.
- Different Proteins: While pulled pork is king for this recipe, the BBQ pizza concept works exceptionally well with other shredded meats. Experiment with shredded BBQ chicken, leftover brisket, or even a spicy Italian sausage for a different protein experience.
Serving Suggestions to Complete Your Meal
A hearty and flavor-packed Southern BBQ Pizza is certainly a meal in itself, substantial enough to satisfy any craving. However, pairing it with a few simple, complementary sides can elevate the entire dining experience and create a more balanced meal. Consider serving your pizza with a crisp, refreshing green salad tossed with a light vinaigrette; the acidity will beautifully cut through the richness of the pizza toppings.
For a truly authentic Southern-inspired spread, a classic creamy coleslaw or a fresh, vibrant corn salad would also make excellent companions, echoing the regional theme. If you’re looking for a comforting and hearty side, grilled corn on the cob (especially when in season) or a warm bowl of baked beans can round out your meal perfectly. Serve slices of pizza immediately for the best flavor and texture. Pair with your favorite refreshing beverage, perhaps an iced tea or a craft beer, and get ready to enjoy a truly satisfying and memorable dinner that brings the best of Southern flavors right to your plate.
