How to Make the Easiest S’mores Cobbler Ever

Creating this delightful S’mores Cobbler is surprisingly straightforward. The magic begins with a creamy chocolate pudding base, which forms a luxurious foundation for all the classic s’mores elements. This pudding layer ensures a rich, moist texture throughout the cobbler, distinguishing it from dryer cake-like desserts.

Once the pudding is spread, it’s time for the signature s’mores components. A generous layer of crisp graham crackers is placed over the pudding, followed by pieces of classic Hershey’s chocolate bars. This initial chocolate layer provides pockets of melted chocolate that will mingle perfectly with the pudding as it bakes.

The next ingenious step involves sprinkling a box of dry cake mix evenly over the chocolate and graham cracker layers. This dry mix might seem unusual, but it’s key to the cobbler’s unique texture. As the cobbler bakes, the cake mix transforms, creating a delicious, cake-like topping that beautifully complements the gooey layers beneath.

To ensure the cake mix fully integrates and becomes a moist, tender batter, pats of butter are strategically placed on top. As the oven heats, these butter slices melt, seeping down into the dry cake mix and moistening it to form a delightful, soft cobbler topping. During this baking process, the graham crackers absorb moisture, becoming wonderfully soft and integrated into the dessert, rather than remaining crisp, creating that true “cobbler” consistency.

Once the cobbler has baked and set, it’s time for the grand finale: a generous covering of marshmallows and additional chocolate pieces. This is where the dessert truly earns its “S’mores” title. The cobbler is then briefly placed under the broiler, where the marshmallows puff up and toast to a beautiful golden brown, becoming wonderfully gooey and slightly charred, just like they would over a campfire. The extra chocolate pieces melt into the marshmallows, enhancing the overall richness.

Essential Recipe Tip: Mastering the Broiler

The final step of broiling the marshmallows is crucial for that perfect toasted s’mores finish, but it requires your full attention! Marshmallows can go from perfectly golden to burnt in a matter of seconds. Keep a close eye on the cobbler while it’s under the broiler. It typically only needs a few minutes – often less – to achieve that beautiful, bubbly, and slightly browned top. Stand by your oven and remove it as soon as the desired golden hue is reached to prevent burning.

Honestly, if there was anything that could rival the joy of roasting classic s’mores over a crackling campfire, this S’mores Cobbler is undoubtedly it! It brings all the beloved flavors and textures of that iconic treat directly to your kitchen, without the smoke or the wait for perfect embers.

Serving Suggestions for Your S’mores Cobbler

While this S’mores Cobbler is utterly delicious on its own, serving it warm with a few delightful accompaniments can elevate the experience even further. A scoop of vanilla bean ice cream melting over the warm cobbler creates a sublime contrast of temperatures and textures. Alternatively, a dollop of freshly whipped cream adds a light, airy touch that balances the richness of the chocolate and marshmallow. For an extra pop of flavor, consider garnishing with a sprinkle of sea salt flakes to enhance the chocolate notes, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce for even more decadence.

Variations & Customizations

This S’mores Cobbler recipe is wonderfully adaptable! Feel free to experiment with different types of chocolate – dark chocolate for a richer flavor, or even white chocolate chips for a sweeter, creamier twist. You could also mix in some chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for added crunch. For a fun seasonal twist, try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to the graham cracker layer. The possibilities are endless to make this dessert uniquely yours!

Storage and Reheating Tips

Should you be lucky enough to have leftovers (it’s rare!), this S’mores Cobbler can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days, covered, or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To enjoy it again with its original gooey texture, gently reheat individual portions in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, or warm the entire dish in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for about 10-15 minutes, until heated through and the marshmallows are softened again. Avoid over-reheating, as marshmallows can become hard.

S’mores Cobbler makes a fantastic summer dessert. It’s gooey and rich with lots of graham crackers, Hershey bar pieces, and marshmallows and it couldn’t be easier to make.

Equipment

  • 9×13-inch baking dish

Ingredients

  • 1 (5.9-ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 1/2 cups cold milk
  • 1 sleeve (about 9) graham crackers
  • 16 mini (0.45-ounce) Hershey bars, broken into pieces
  • 1 (15.25-ounce) box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter, cut into thin slices
  • 1 (10-ounce) package large marshmallows, cut each one in half

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk pudding mix and milk until mixture thickens, about 3 minutes. Pour into prepared pan.
  • Layer graham crackers on top of pudding. Scatter a little over half of the Hershey pieces on top of the graham crackers.
  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the chocolate and graham crackers.
  • Scatter the butter slices over the cake mix.
  • Bake for 22-25 minutes, or until the cake mix is mostly set and golden around the edges.
  • After baking, take a spoon or spatula and gently mix any dry cake mix into the baked layers. It’s okay if you break up the graham cracker pieces slightly; they will soften further.
  • Layer the halved marshmallows on top and scatter the remaining chocolate pieces between the marshmallows.
  • Place under the broiler (preheated) for 1-3 minutes until the marshmallows are toasted and browned. Watch carefully to prevent burning. Serve warm.
