An Unforgettable California Wine Tour: My First Cruise Adventure on the Ruby Princess

Last month marked a significant first for me: embarking on my inaugural cruise, a spectacular California Wine Tour Cruise aboard the magnificent Ruby Princess. This journey was meticulously designed with a keen focus on food and wine – truly a dream come true for a culinary enthusiast like myself! The itinerary boasted an array of exciting activities, including captivating cooking demonstrations led by the renowned Iron Chef Cat Cora and acclaimed chef Suzanne Tracht. Beyond the onboard delights, the cruise featured two highly anticipated wine excursions: one to the picturesque vineyards of Santa Barbara, California, and another across the border to the vibrant wine region of Ensenada, Mexico.

Discovering Santa Barbara’s Coastal Charm and Vineyard Beauty

Having never visited Santa Barbara before, the prospect of spending an entire day exploring this renowned coastal city filled me with immense excitement. From the moment we arrived, it was clear why Santa Barbara is often called the “American Riviera.” The city’s natural beauty is simply unparalleled, offering vistas that are nothing short of spectacular! The Pacific Ocean here shimmers in an exquisite shade of azure, dotted with graceful sailboats that dance across the water, all set against a dramatic backdrop of rolling mountains. This harmonious blend of sea and peaks creates a truly breathtaking panorama, a sight that instantly captivates the soul.

A Journey to Fess Parker Winery: A Taste of History and Terroir

Our Santa Barbara adventure continued with a scenic drive, approximately 30 minutes inland, to the renowned Fess Parker Winery. Nestled beautifully along the prestigious Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, the winery instantly exuded a sense of rustic elegance. For those unfamiliar with its fascinating origins, the winery was founded by the beloved actor Fess Parker, famous for his iconic roles as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone on television. This connection to a childhood hero added an unexpected layer of nostalgia to the experience.

The mention of Daniel Boone invariably transports me back to cherished childhood memories of family meals at the Daniel Boone Inn in Boone, North Carolina. I recall thinking it was the most incredible restaurant, where everything was served family-style, allowing guests to help themselves from generous platters of delicious food placed in the center of the table. While a delightful detour down memory lane, our focus for the day was on the rich heritage and exquisite wines of the Fess Parker estate.

Exploring the Legacy: From Gifts to Grapes

Upon our arrival at the winery, we took a few moments to browse the charming gift shop, which offered an array of specialty foods and unique souvenirs. Among the delightful finds were the playful coonskin caps – one of which Ted, my companion, found surprisingly fitting! I was particularly smitten with the intricate coonskin wine toppers, a clever nod to the winery’s founder. It was clear that the spirit of Fess Parker lived on, not just in the wine, but in these thoughtful details.

The Fess Parker Winery remains a proudly family-run business, a testament to enduring passion and dedication. This sprawling estate encompasses an impressive 1,500 acres spread across four distinct vineyards, each contributing to the diverse character and quality of their wines. The commitment to family heritage and the art of winemaking is palpable throughout the property, making every visit a truly personal experience.

The Fess Parker Winery Tour and Exceptional Wine Tasting Experience

Our visit included a comprehensive tour of the winery, providing fascinating insights into their winemaking process, from grape cultivation to bottling. We learned about the unique microclimates of their different vineyards and the philosophy that guides their production. Following the informative tour, we settled in for a delightful tasting session, sampling a diverse selection of their acclaimed wines. Each varietal presented a distinct character, showcasing the unique terroir of Santa Barbara County. From crisp whites to robust reds, I found myself thoroughly impressed, truly loving every single one of them. The passion and expertise of the Fess Parker team shone through in every pour.

Despite the ongoing drought conditions that California has experienced, the vineyards and surrounding landscape remained remarkably beautiful. The golden hues of the hillsides, under the bright California sun, created a stunning backdrop for our tasting. We were particularly fortunate that the winery boasted a spacious, covered outdoor area, which proved to be a lifesaver on what was a decidedly hot day! While the heat was considerable, it was a dry heat, a welcome change from the oppressive humidity I’m accustomed to in South Carolina. Give me California hot over South Carolina hot any day, thanks to that wonderful lack of humidity.

Culinary Delights with Pascale Beale and the Star Power of Cat Cora

As we savored the exquisite wines, our experience was elevated further by a truly amazing food pairing prepared by the talented Pascale Beale. Pascale is a celebrated author of numerous beautiful cookbooks, renowned for her exquisite seasonal Mediterranean-style recipes. Her culinary creations were a perfect complement to the Fess Parker wines, enhancing every sip. During her presentation, she shared a heartwarming and inspiring story about how she developed a close and cherished friendship with the late, legendary Julia Child. Her personal anecdotes offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of these culinary icons, adding a deeply personal touch to our gourmet experience.

This delightful bruschetta was the first course we were served, and its fresh flavors and perfect texture were truly wonderful when paired with the winery’s selections.

While all the other food offerings were equally amazing, I must confess that I neglected to capture them with my camera. It appears I may have been enjoying the wine and the company a little too much to remember my photography duties!

A Stroll Along the Santa Barbara Pier and Beach

After our enriching wine excursion at Fess Parker Winery, we still had a precious window of time to explore the vibrant Santa Barbara Pier and stroll along its inviting beach. The pier was bustling with activity, offering stunning views of the coastline and the azure Pacific. The fresh sea air was invigorating, providing a perfect contrast to the warmth of the vineyards. This brief but delightful interlude allowed us to soak in more of Santa Barbara’s iconic coastal charm before it was time to catch a tender boat back to the elegant Ruby Princess, awaiting our return in the harbor.

An Enduring Cruise Ritual: Sunset and Salted Caramel Lattes

Once back onboard the Ruby Princess, a delightful ritual quickly emerged for us: a visit to the International Cafe for a much-anticipated Salted Caramel Latte. These lattes were, without exaggeration, incredibly delicious and became an indispensable part of our late-afternoon routine. I’ve never attempted to make a latte at home, but this experience has certainly inspired me to try and recreate that perfect balance of sweet and savory. Each day, with our steaming lattes in hand, we would make our way to the Promenade Deck. This particular deck became one of my absolute favorite spots on the entire ship. It offered a quiet and serene ambiance, and its proximity to the water, much closer than the higher decks, provided an unparalleled connection to the vast ocean.

Sitting there, sipping our lattes, we watched in awe as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with an array of spectacular colors. There’s truly nothing quite like witnessing a magnificent sunset over the open water, and it’s a spectacle one can never grow tired of. This daily ritual perfectly encapsulated the balance of our cruise: while there were endless exciting activities and explorations each day, there was always time carved out for these peaceful, reflective moments. The simple pleasure of a Salted Caramel Latte combined with the mesmerizing beauty of a sunset at sea truly created an unforgettable luxury cruise experience.

It was incredibly rewarding to discover that amidst the packed schedule of fun and exciting things to do each day on our California Wine Cruise, there was still ample opportunity to cultivate a cherished daily ritual. And honestly, nothing beats the serene pleasure of sipping a perfectly crafted Salted Caramel Latte while witnessing the sun gracefully descend over the shimmering ocean. This balance of adventure and tranquility is what makes a cruise on the Ruby Princess truly special.

Stay tuned, because as amazing and captivating as our Santa Barbara Excursion was, you simply will not believe the absolutely stunning views that awaited us at the next winery in Ensenada, Mexico. Get ready for a truly incredible visual feast!
