My First Cruise Experience: An Unforgettable Journey Aboard the Ruby Princess
Last week marked a momentous occasion in my travel adventures: my very first cruise! For those who follow my journey on Instagram, you might have caught glimpses of this incredible voyage. It was a delightful 4-night escape aboard the stunning Ruby Princess, departing from the vibrant Port of Los Angeles. Our itinerary whisked us away to the charming coastal city of Santa Barbara, California, before venturing south to the lively shores of Ensenada, Mexico. As a complete novice to the world of cruising, I approached this trip with a mix of excitement and a touch of apprehension. Would I be prone to seasickness? Would the confined spaces trigger claustrophobia? These were the questions swirling in my mind.

As it turned out, all my worries were completely unfounded. The cruise was an absolute blast, leaving me wondering why I had waited over four decades to experience such a magnificent form of travel. During our time on board, my husband and I had the pleasure of conversing with several seasoned cruisers, many of whom were retired and dedicated a significant portion of their leisure time to exploring the world by sea. One particular couple had even booked four Princess Cruises back-to-back – what a truly splendid way to embrace retirement! Every experienced voyager we met unanimously affirmed that Princess Cruises was an exceptional choice for our inaugural cruise, setting a remarkably high standard for future adventures. This first taste has undeniably whetted our appetite, and I envision many more cruises charting our future.

Discovering the Magnificent Ruby Princess: A Ship of Dreams
Since returning home, we’ve been greeted by four consecutive days of rather dreary, rainy weather. My mind keeps drifting back to the sun-drenched decks of the Ruby Princess, longing for that gorgeous, expansive view of the sparkling ocean. There’s an undeniable serenity and peacefulness that comes with gazing out at the endless water, a feeling that truly can’t be replicated elsewhere.

You just can’t beat that view. So peaceful and relaxing, perfect for unwinding.

The Ruby Princess itself is an absolutely amazing vessel, a true marvel of modern naval architecture that made its grand debut on November 8, 2008. She is a genuine beauty, boasting 19 decks, four inviting pools, seven soothing whirlpools, and an astonishing array of restaurants – so many, in fact, that you simply won’t have enough time to sample them all during your voyage! With approximately 1,200 dedicated crew members catering to a capacity of 3,082 passengers, the Ruby Princess ensures an exceptional level of service and comfort. A remarkable eighty percent of all outside cabins on board are equipped with private balconies, offering passengers unparalleled personal views of the ocean’s majesty.

Our Cozy Balcony Stateroom: A Private Oasis at Sea
In my sheer excitement upon first boarding the ship, I must confess that I completely forgot to capture any photos of our room. We were greeted with a wonderful welcome package: a chilled bottle of champagne and decadent chocolate-covered strawberries. Can you truly blame me for being a little distracted? And truthfully, you probably wouldn’t have wanted to see pictures after I’d unleashed my luggage. Tidiness, as my husband will attest, has never been my strongest suit!

As one might expect on a cruise ship, the rooms are designed to be compact, yet they are incredibly functional and cleverly optimized for space. Our stateroom featured a surprisingly large closet, which proved immensely helpful in keeping our belongings organized and out of the way. While the bathroom might not have comfortably accommodated two people simultaneously, it provided everything we needed and felt remarkably clean and modern. However, the true highlight of our room was undeniably the balcony. The moment you step in, your gaze is immediately drawn to that huge, breathtaking expanse of ocean outside. It’s truly magnificent, offering a private sanctuary to enjoy the fresh sea air and stunning vistas. There’s something uniquely soothing about sleeping on a cruise ship; the gentle, rhythmic rocking sensation makes you feel as though you’re being lulled to sleep, a truly blissful experience.

Life Aboard: Endless Entertainment and Culinary Delights

What I loved most about being on a cruise was the sheer, overwhelming variety of things to do. It is absolutely, unequivocally impossible to get bored. The genius of a cruise lies in its dynamic rhythm: alternating between exhilarating days at sea and captivating days at port. This unique blend injects an incredible amount of diversity into your vacation, ensuring that each day feels like a fresh and exciting adventure. On days spent at sea, as the ship gracefully glides from one port to another, a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement truly builds among passengers. And there is so much to keep you delightfully busy!

Endless Entertainment Options
The Ruby Princess offers an impressive array of entertainment to suit every taste. From the iconic “Movies Under the Stars” experience, where you can watch blockbusters on a giant LED screen while lounging by the pool under the night sky, to lively karaoke sessions and hilarious stand-up comedienne performances, there’s always something engaging happening. Beyond the scheduled shows, the ship is a vibrant hub of activity. You can try your luck at the bustling casino, perfect your swing on the 9-hole putting course, or enjoy a friendly game on the mini basketball court. For those who love to shop, duty-free boutiques offer an enticing selection of goods. And for ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation, the luxurious Lotus Spa and state-of-the-art fitness center provide the perfect escape. Plus, simply exploring the vast ship itself is an adventure; it’s so huge you never know what hidden gem or charming nook you’ll discover around the next corner.

Serene Retreats and Romantic Sunsets
The ship masterfully balances areas designed for lively entertainment and a party atmosphere with tranquil havens where you can almost feel like you have the entire ship to yourself. My husband and I particularly cherished our evenings on the Promenade Deck, where we would watch the spectacular sunsets unfold. It was wonderfully quiet, with only a handful of other people sharing in the magic of the moment. Another exquisite place to find a little quiet time and indulge in pure relaxation is The Sanctuary, pictured below. This adults-only retreat offers plush lounge chairs, refreshing beverages, and attentive service, making it an ideal spot to unwind completely. I honestly think I could spend an entire day there, lost in blissful serenity!

Culinary Journey and Enchanting Ports of Call
Beyond the endless activities and relaxation, the Ruby Princess offers a culinary experience that is truly a highlight of any voyage. The food was nothing short of amazing – abundant, diverse, and exquisitely prepared across numerous dining venues. From casual buffet options to elegant main dining rooms and specialty restaurants, there’s a gastronomic adventure awaiting every palate. We even had the opportunity to learn about a unique culinary experience featuring renowned chefs like Iron Chef Cat Cora and Suzanne Tracht from Top Chef, showcasing the commitment Princess Cruises has to exceptional dining. The pinnacle of our culinary journey might very well have been the exclusive Chef’s Table dinner, an intimate and unforgettable event that provided a behind-the-scenes look at the ship’s gourmet operations. It was a truly memorable evening that enhanced our appreciation for the culinary artistry on board.
Our cruise also took us to two enchanting ports of call, adding another layer of excitement and exploration to our adventure. In Santa Barbara, California, we were captivated by the city’s picturesque beauty, its Spanish colonial architecture, and sun-drenched beaches. It offered a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely stroll and soaking in the local charm. Then, we journeyed to Ensenada, Mexico, a bustling port city known for its vibrant culture, delicious street food, and lively atmosphere. Exploring the local markets, enjoying authentic tacos, and experiencing the lively energy of the city provided a wonderful contrast to the serenity of being at sea. These port days truly underscored the multifaceted appeal of a cruise, allowing us to immerse ourselves in different cultures and landscapes.
