My recent adventure to Puerto Rico was nothing short of spectacular, and if you’ve been following my social media, you’ve likely seen a glimpse of the vibrant photos and experiences I shared. My travels involved convenient connections, flying through Fort Lauderdale on my outbound journey and making a smooth stop in Orlando on the way back. One of the many benefits of visiting Puerto Rico as a US citizen is the remarkable ease of travel; there’s no need to navigate customs, making for a streamlined and stress-free arrival. In fact, just 30 minutes after stepping off the plane in San Juan, I found myself already checking into my charming hotel nestled in the heart of Old San Juan, ready to immerse myself in the island’s rich culture and history.
My First-Class Experience with Southwest Airlines
This trip marked my inaugural experience flying with Southwest Airlines, and I must admit, their unassigned seating system initially struck me as quite unconventional. However, after just a couple of flights, I quickly became a dedicated advocate. The absence of predetermined seats, coupled with their incredibly efficient boarding process, transformed what can often be a chaotic experience on other airlines into a surprisingly smooth, orderly, and remarkably swift operation. There’s a noticeable sense of calm and efficiency that truly sets Southwest apart, making the start and end of a journey far more pleasant.
A Historic Stay at Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan
During my stay in San Juan, I had the immense pleasure of residing at the exquisite Hotel El Convento. This establishment is simply extraordinary in every conceivable way. Its location in Old San Juan is utterly unparalleled, serving as the most perfect home base for exploring the area. Within an incredibly short walk from El Convento, you’ll discover a treasure trove of historical sites, vibrant shops, and culinary delights, ensuring that every moment of your exploration is effortless and enriching.
Hotel El Convento is a charming, small boutique hotel with a fascinating past. Originally a convent dating back to 1651, the building itself is steeped in centuries of history, creating an atmosphere that is both grand and intimately inviting. The architectural details, from its soaring ceilings to its intricate courtyards, whisper tales of bygone eras, offering guests a truly unique glimpse into Puerto Rico’s colonial heritage. What makes El Convento truly exceptional is its ability to seamlessly blend this rich historical ambiance with all the comforts and conveniences of modern luxury. My room, for instance, was a haven of comfort, and the bathroom was particularly impressive. Featuring a luxurious shower with five shower heads and an instant supply of warm water, it provided a spa-like experience that was a welcome indulgence after a day of sightseeing.

Immersed in Nature: Exploring El Yunque Rainforest
The following morning brought an exciting scheduled tour of the renowned El Yunque Rainforest with Castillo Watersports. Conveniently located just 25 miles from my hotel, the journey was made effortless by a comfortable van pickup a short distance from my doorstep. This excursion was a highly anticipated highlight, as I had never before set foot in a tropical rainforest and harbored a keen curiosity about what to expect from such a vibrant ecosystem.
My initial expectations of a hot, intensely humid, and possibly mosquito-ridden environment were delightfully shattered. To my pleasant surprise, El Yunque proved to be wonderfully peaceful and incredibly pleasant. The temperature, at least on the day of my visit, was remarkably comfortable – far from the muggy conditions I had envisioned. Even more astonishing, I wasn’t bothered by a single bug throughout our exploration! While occasional light rain showers are characteristic of a rainforest, a handy umbrella ensured I remained dry and comfortable, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the experience.
The scenery was nothing short of breathtaking, with lush, verdant foliage stretching as far as the eye could see, punctuated by vibrant flora and cascading waterfalls. The air was filled with the gentle rustling of leaves and the distinctive chirping of countless coqui tree frogs, creating a symphony of nature that was deeply calming. Our tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly, providing fascinating insights into the rainforest’s unique biodiversity, its ecological importance, and the captivating stories behind its various inhabitants. Their expertise truly enriched the experience, making every step of the journey an educational and awe-inspiring discovery.
Captivated by the Charms of Old San Juan
Returning to Old San Juan by early afternoon, I had several hours to freely wander and explore its enchanting streets. The sheer beauty and unique character of this historic district compelled me to take an abundance of pictures – it was impossible not to capture every captivating detail!
If you’re seeking a Caribbean experience that transcends the typical resort destinations and offers something truly authentic and distinctive, Old San Juan is unequivocally the place to be. I was instantly captivated by its vibrant, kaleidoscopic colors, the unique charm of its blue cobblestone streets, and the intricate, awe-inspiring colonial architecture that adorns every corner. The warmth and welcoming spirit of its people, the profound sense of history that permeates every alleyway, and the delectable fusion of flavors found in its cuisine, all contribute to a rich tapestry of culture that is utterly irresistible. I fell completely and utterly in love with this magical city from the moment I arrived, finding endless fascination in its lively plazas, historic forts, and bustling artisan shops.

Old San Juan occupies a small islet, masterfully connected to Puerto Rico’s main island by three picturesque bridges. This unique geographical feature ensures that water views are a constant companion, offering a refreshing maritime ambiance throughout the city. Indeed, it feels like everywhere you turn, another breathtaking vista unfolds, whether it’s the shimmering ocean, the historic city walls, or the colorful boats dotting the harbor. The interplay of ancient architecture and natural beauty creates an endlessly captivating landscape for visitors.
A Gastronomic Delight: Spoon Food Tours
Puerto Rican cuisine is truly a revelation, boasting an incredible array of flavors and culinary traditions. I was incredibly fortunate to embark on a Spoon Food Tours experience, which allowed me to sample dishes from five different restaurants in just one short evening. I cannot recommend these tours highly enough if you find yourself in San Juan. It is, without a doubt, the most efficient and enjoyable way to savor a wide variety of authentic local foods in a condensed timeframe. Moreover, your tour guide serves as an invaluable fount of knowledge, offering fascinating insights into the island’s culinary history, local ingredients, and the best places to eat, making them the perfect resource for restaurant recommendations. Our culinary journey began with a stop at Haecho en Casa, where I indulged in a perfectly crafted mofongo – a quintessential Puerto Rican dish made from mashed plantains, often filled with savory meats or seafood. Next, we savored a truly fabulous chocolate cocktail, a sublime blend of rich chocolate, local rum, zesty ginger, and refreshing lime, at the acclaimed Casa Cortes Chocobar. Club Spritz delighted with a sophisticated red wine risotto, expertly paired with flavorful Puerto Rican pork sausage. At Princesa Gastro Bar, renowned for its phenomenal outdoor dining area nestled amidst lush gardens, we enjoyed a comforting fish and chickpea stew. Our delicious tour concluded on a sweet note at Trapiele Gelato, where their artisanal creations were simply amazing. Each stop offered a unique taste of the island’s diverse culinary landscape, leaving me completely satisfied and eager for more.
Leaving Puerto Rico was genuinely difficult; I was utterly charmed by its beauty, its vibrant culture, and the warmth of its people. I am already dreaming of my next visit and eagerly anticipate returning to explore even more of this incredible island paradise.

You’ll find yourself wanting to wander up and down every single street, discovering hidden gems around every corner. Trust me, your feet will thank you, as the picturesque blue cobblestone streets, while stunning, can be quite uneven and challenging for less-than-supportive footwear.
- Maximize Your Camera Space: Old San Juan is an absolute photographer’s paradise! From the vibrant colonial buildings and historic forts to the charming alleyways, breathtaking ocean views, and the lively street scenes, there are endless opportunities to capture stunning images. Ensure your digital camera has ample space (or bring extra memory cards) so you don’t miss a single shot.

Plan an excursion to another part of the island to truly enhance your experience. I highly recommend the El Yunque Rainforest tour for its unique biodiversity and serene atmosphere. Other popular options include a magical trip to the Bioluminescent Bay, where the water glows at night, or an adventurous exploration of the Rio Camuy Cave Park, one of the largest cave systems in the world.
