The Ultimate Soft and Chewy M&M Cookies: A Recipe for Pure Joy
There’s something uniquely magical about M&M cookies that instantly transports us back to childhood. Perhaps it’s the explosion of vibrant colors, the satisfying crunch of the candy shell, or the perfect balance of a rich, buttery cookie base. These aren’t just any M&M cookies; this is a meticulously crafted recipe designed to deliver an unparalleled soft and chewy texture, generously studded with those iconic candy-coated chocolates. Forget dry, crumbly imitations – prepare yourself for a batch of homemade M&M cookies that are truly irresistible and sure to become a cherished family favorite.

Why This M&M Cookie Recipe Stands Out from the Rest
Our quest for the perfect M&M cookie began with a robust foundation: a highly-rated recipe for Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies, originally inspired by the culinary experts at Cook’s Illustrated. Renowned for their meticulous testing and scientific approach to baking, Cook’s Illustrated recipes consistently deliver exceptional results. By simply swapping the traditional chocolate chips for an abundance of colorful M&M’s, we’ve created a cookie that marries a flawlessly chewy texture with an extra dose of playful delight and visual appeal.
What elevates these M&M cookies above typical recipes? It’s all in the intelligent ingredient choices and precise methodology. The incorporation of melted butter, rather than softened butter, is a game-changer. Melted butter ensures a denser, chewier cookie by inhibiting gluten development, preventing the cakey texture that can disappoint. Furthermore, the addition of an extra egg yolk introduces more fat and moisture, significantly contributing to the rich flavor and incredibly soft, tender crumb. These thoughtful adjustments are what guarantee that every single bite of these homemade M&M cookies is packed with irresistible flavor and that coveted soft-and-chewy characteristic that store-bought varieties simply cannot replicate. Say goodbye to dry, brittle cookies and hello to pure, homemade perfection.
The Irresistible Allure and Versatility of M&M’s
Beyond their delightful crunch and rich chocolate core, M&M’s bring an unparalleled burst of color and vibrant fun to every cookie. The bright, candy-coated shells are not just visually appealing; they evoke a sense of nostalgia and playful excitement, making these cookies an instant hit for any gathering, from school bake sales to festive holiday parties, or simply a cozy afternoon treat. While we adore the classic, regular-sized M&M’s for their generous chocolate-to-cookie ratio, this recipe is incredibly adaptable, inviting creativity and customization.
Imagine tailoring your M&M cookies to perfectly match any holiday or special occasion! You could use charming mini M&M’s for a more delicate bite, or select pastel-colored M&M’s to celebrate Easter or a baby shower. For Christmas, a mix of festive red and green M&M’s adds a wonderful touch, while orange and black varieties can create a fun, spooky treat for Halloween. The possibilities are truly endless, allowing you to personalize each batch of M&M cookies and make them uniquely special. The satisfying snap of the candy shell provides a wonderful textural contrast to the soft, yielding cookie, transforming these M&M cookies into a multi-sensory delight that appeals to all ages.
A Heartwarming Family Tradition: Baking for a Cause
This particular M&M cookie recipe holds a very special place in our family’s history, deeply rooted in a meaningful act of generosity. A few years ago (this recipe was originally published in February 2015), my daughter and I spent countless hours in the kitchen, lovingly preparing numerous batches of these cheerful M&M cookies. They were part of a larger baking marathon that also included other crowd-pleasers like Oreo Stuffed Brownies and Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins, all for a fundraiser meticulously organized by my son. Our mission was to raise vital funds for cancer research, and for such an important event, we absolutely needed a recipe that was foolproof, consistently delicious, and guaranteed to be a huge hit with everyone.
These M&M cookies truly proved themselves as our trusty recipe, exceeding all expectations with their consistently soft and chewy texture. They were a resounding success, demonstrating that homemade treats, especially when baked with love for a good cause, are always more than just food – they are cherished memories in the making. On a lighter note, with my daughter’s first and last initials both being “M”, I once playfully considered giving her a middle name starting with “N” as a nod to the iconic candy. While we ultimately chose a family name, giving her the middle initial “C”, her school friends recently sparked a funny family tradition. Due to the initials on her backpack, they sometimes playfully tease her with “Man Candy Monday.” Now, every Monday serves as the perfect, delicious excuse to whip up a fresh batch of these vibrant M&M cookies, transforming a sweet family joke into an even sweeter weekly indulgence.

Essential Equipment for Baking Perfect M&M Cookies
Having the right tools in your kitchen can significantly enhance your baking experience, ensuring consistent and delectable results with every batch of M&M cookies. For this recipe, a few key pieces of equipment will truly elevate your baking:
- Electric Stand Mixer or Hand-Held Mixer: Achieving the perfect cookie dough consistency without overworking it is crucial. An electric stand mixer or a robust hand-held mixer is highly recommended. These tools efficiently cream the butter and sugars, incorporating essential air for a lighter, more tender cookie texture while ensuring all ingredients are thoroughly and evenly combined.
- Reliable Baking Sheets: Quality baking sheets are paramount for even baking. Opt for heavy-gauge aluminum sheets that distribute heat consistently, preventing undesirable burnt bottoms or undercooked centers. For effortless cleanup and to ensure your cookies don’t stick, always line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Cookie Scoop: While you can certainly use a spoon, a cookie scoop is an invaluable tool for ensuring uniform cookie size. This consistency is vital for even baking, meaning all your M&M cookies will be perfectly done at the same time, and each one will be a delightful, consistent treat.
- Wire Cooling Rack: Allowing your freshly baked cookies to cool properly on a wire rack is essential. This prevents moisture from accumulating on the bottom, which can make them soggy, and helps them set up perfectly, retaining their desired soft and chewy texture throughout.

Top Tips for Achieving Perfectly Soft and Chewy M&M Cookies
While this recipe is designed for success, a few expert tips and techniques will guarantee your M&M cookies are nothing short of spectacular:
- Do Not Overmix the Dough: This is a golden rule for all cookie recipes, especially when aiming for chewiness. Once you’ve added the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mix just until they are barely combined and no streaks of flour are visible. Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, which can lead to tough, dense, and less chewy cookies.
- Embrace the “Pull Apart” Technique: The unique method of forming a dough ball, gently pulling it into two halves, rotating one half 90 degrees, and then pressing them back together is a secret weapon from Cook’s Illustrated. This technique creates those desirable craggy edges that bake up beautifully, prevents excessive spreading, and ultimately results in a thicker cookie with a wonderfully chewy center.
- Crucially, Avoid Overbaking: This is arguably the most critical tip for achieving truly soft and chewy M&M cookies. Remove the cookies from the oven when their edges are just set and lightly golden, but the centers still appear slightly soft, puffed, and even a little undercooked. They will continue to bake from the residual heat of the hot baking sheet as they cool, firming up to the perfect soft and chewy consistency.
- Ensure Proper Cooling: Resist the urge to move the cookies immediately! Allow your M&M cookies to cool on the baking sheets for at least 5 to 10 minutes after removing them from the oven. This allows them to finish setting and firm up sufficiently before being transferred to a wire rack. Proper cooling prevents breakage and ensures they retain their exquisite soft texture.
- Experiment with M&M Varieties and Flavors: Don’t be afraid to get creative! Beyond the classic milk chocolate M&M’s, consider trying peanut, crispy, dark chocolate, or even seasonal M&M varieties. You can also mix in other chocolate chips (milk, semi-sweet, white) for a unique flavor profile and textural complexity, making each batch your own signature treat.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Homemade M&M Cookies
Here are answers to some common questions to help you bake the best M&M cookies possible:
- Q: Can I chill the M&M cookie dough before baking?
A: Yes, and it’s highly recommended if you have the time! Chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes, or even overnight, can significantly deepen the flavors, allow the dry ingredients to fully hydrate, and help prevent the cookies from spreading too much. This results in an even chewier, more flavorful cookie. If baking from chilled dough, you might need to add an extra minute or two to the baking time. - Q: How should I store M&M cookies to maintain their freshness and chewiness?
A: To keep your delicious M&M cookies soft and fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They will typically retain their wonderful texture and flavor for up to 5 days. For longer storage options, refer to the freezing tips below. - Q: Is it possible to freeze M&M cookie dough or baked cookies?
A: Absolutely! This recipe is fantastic for freezing. To freeze dough: simply portion it into balls (using the pull-apart technique), place them on a baking sheet, and freeze until they are completely solid. Once frozen, transfer the dough balls to a freezer-safe bag or container and store for up to 3 months. You can bake them directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the bake time. To freeze baked cookies: allow them to cool completely, then arrange them in a single layer in an airtight freezer-safe container, separated by parchment paper, or in a freezer-safe bag. They can be stored for 2-3 months. Thaw them at room temperature before serving. - Q: Why are my M&M cookies turning out flat or hard?
A: Flat cookies can often be caused by using butter that is too warm (causing it to spread too quickly), overmixing the dough (which breaks down air bubbles), or an oven that isn’t preheated to the correct temperature. Hard cookies are almost always a sign of overbaking. Remember the critical tip: remove them from the oven when the centers still look slightly soft and undercooked. - Q: Can I use different types of chocolate or candies in this base recipe?
A: While this recipe shines with M&M’s, the cookie base is incredibly versatile! You can certainly substitute M&M’s with an equal amount of your favorite chocolate chips (milk, semi-sweet, dark), white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or even a delightful combination of M&M’s and chocolate chips for a truly unique and delicious twist.

Equipment
-
Electric Mixer
-
Baking Sheets
Ingredients
- 2⅛ cups all-purpose flour, (10⅝ ounces)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
- 1 cup light or dark brown sugar, ( 7 ounces)
- ½ cup granulated sugar, (3½ ounces)
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1-2 cups candy covered chocolate pieces, of course you know 2 cups is best!
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (160°C). Position your oven racks in the upper-middle and lower-middle positions. This slightly lower baking temperature is intentional, helping to ensure a perfectly chewy interior and preventing over-browning.
-
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking soda. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly to ensure they are evenly distributed. Set this bowl aside for later use.
-
Using an electric mixer (either stand or hand-held), beat the melted and slightly cooled unsalted butter together with both the light or dark brown sugar and the granulated sugar. Continue to beat until the mixture is thoroughly blended and has a creamy consistency. Next, mix in the large egg, the additional large egg yolk, and the vanilla extract until they are just combined. Gradually add the reserved dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed only until they are just combined and no streaks of flour remain. Be very careful not to overmix at this stage! Finally, gently fold in the 1 to 2 cups of candy-covered chocolate pieces (M&M’s) until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough. Remember, more M&M’s usually means more deliciousness!
-
For perfectly shaped and textured cookies, scoop a scant ¼ cup of dough and roll it into a ball. Holding the dough ball gently in both hands, pull it apart into two roughly equal halves. Rotate one half by exactly 90 degrees so that its jagged edge faces upwards, then press the two pieces back together again. Place these uniquely formed dough balls onto your prepared baking sheets, ensuring the jagged edges are still facing up. Space them approximately 2½ inches apart to allow for proper spreading during baking.
-
Bake for 15-18 minutes, rotating the baking sheets halfway through if your oven bakes unevenly. The most crucial step for achieving soft and chewy M&M cookies is to slightly undercook them. They should be just set and lightly golden around the edges, but the centers should still appear a little soft, puffy, and even slightly underbaked when you remove them from the oven. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheets; this helps them finish baking from residual heat and firm up to their ideal soft and chewy texture.
