As the holiday season draws near, the comforting aromas of traditional desserts fill our homes. While pumpkin pie often steals the spotlight, for those of us with Southern roots, a homemade sweet potato pie holds a special place in our hearts. This season, I’m thrilled to share a delightful twist on this classic: a Lightened-Up Sweet Potato Pie that captures all the rich, creamy goodness you love, but with significantly less added sugar. By incorporating SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend, we achieve that perfect balance of sweetness, allowing the natural, vibrant flavors of fall to truly shine.

Imagine a pie with a velvety, spiced sweet potato filling, beautifully complemented by a crunchy, buttery pecan topping. This recipe delivers exactly that, making it an indispensable addition to your festive table. It’s an ideal dessert for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any autumnal gathering, promising warmth and cheer in every bite. This pie embodies the essence of the season with fresh, in-season sweet potatoes, aromatic cinnamon, and a hint of allspice – a symphony of fall flavors that will enchant your palate.

Lightened Up Sweet Potato Pie - A Delicious Holiday Dessert

Growing up in North Carolina, often called “The Sweet Potato State,” a holiday feast was simply incomplete without a glorious sweet potato pie. It’s more than just a dessert; it’s a cherished tradition, a taste of home. If you’re new to sweet potato pie, prepare to be charmed. Its texture is remarkably smooth, almost custard-like, bearing a delicate sweetness that’s incredibly satisfying. It shares a comforting familiarity with pumpkin pie but offers a distinct, earthy sweetness and a slightly richer, more complex flavor profile that many find irresistible.

Sweet Potato Pie: A Southern Holiday Tradition

One of the best aspects of this Lightened-Up Sweet Potato Pie is its simplicity. It’s fabulously easy to prepare, making it a perfect choice even for busy holiday cooks. The secret to its reduced sugar content lies in SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend. This innovative blend enhances the inherent sweetness of the sweet potatoes without overwhelming them, resulting in a pie that’s perfectly sweet but never cloying. You get all the comforting sweetness you desire, but with fewer calories, allowing you to indulge a little more freely.

But what truly elevates this pie is its incredible pecan topping. This isn’t just an afterthought; it’s a crucial element that provides a delightful textural contrast to the creamy filling. Chopped pecans are lightly tossed with a touch of melted butter and more SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend. As the pie bakes, these pecans transform into a shimmering, candy-like crust, adding a buttery crunch that makes each spoonful an absolute dream. The combination of the smooth filling and the crisp topping is simply divine, creating a dynamic eating experience that’s both elegant and comforting.

Creamy Sweet Potato Pie with Crunchy Pecan Topping

Beyond the sweetness and texture, the spice blend is key to achieving that quintessential fall flavor. A generous amount of ground cinnamon and allspice (though nutmeg makes an excellent substitute if preferred) infuses the pie with a warm, inviting aroma and a spicy depth that perfectly complements the sweet potato. These spices evoke the very essence of autumn, making this pie a truly sensory delight. For convenience, I opted for a store-bought frozen deep-dish pie crust, which significantly simplifies the preparation without compromising on taste. However, if you have a favorite homemade crust recipe, feel free to use it for an extra personal touch.

This Lightened-Up Sweet Potato Pie is wonderfully versatile. Enjoy it warm from the oven, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or chilled with a generous dollop of freshly whipped cream. Both serving temperatures offer a uniquely fabulous experience. A warm slice is pure comfort, while a cold slice offers a refreshing sweetness, perfect after a hearty holiday meal.

My personal favorite for fall baking, and certainly for this sweet potato pie, is the SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend. It’s an ingenious mixture of SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener and traditional brown sugar, offering the best of both worlds. You get that unmistakable, deep molasses-like flavor and rich aroma that brown sugar is known for, which pairs exquisitely with all sorts of fall dishes, especially sweet potato pie, but with only half the calories and sugar! The convenience is also a huge plus: simply use half the amount of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend compared to regular brown sugar called for in any recipe. For example, if a recipe traditionally asks for 1 cup of brown sugar, you’d only need 1/2 cup of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend. It’s also fantastic for sweetening oatmeal or adding a touch of brown sugar goodness to your morning coffee.

Beyond the calorie reduction, SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend consistently delivers the same beautiful color, desirable texture, and that comforting molasses flavor that we associate with classic brown sugar. It’s truly gratifying when you can significantly cut down on sugar and calories without making any compromises on taste or quality. This innovation empowers you to create mouth-watering desserts and dishes that everyone will love, making healthier eating enjoyable and effortless. Don’t you agree that savoring full flavor while making healthier choices is the ultimate win?

A Sweet Potato Pie with a creamy filling and a crunchy pecan topping makes a wonderful dessert for the holidays.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups mashed cooked sweet potatoes
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend
  • 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 9-inch deep-dish pie shell, unbaked
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Place sweet potatoes in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on medium speed until completely smooth.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  4. Add 1/3 cup SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend, evaporated milk, cinnamon, allspice, and vanilla to the mixture. Beat until well combined and smooth.
  5. Pour the sweet potato filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  6. In a small separate bowl, combine the 2 tablespoons of melted butter and 1 tablespoon of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend. Stir until well mixed.
  7. Add the chopped pecans to the butter and sugar mixture, tossing gently to ensure they are evenly coated.
  8. Sprinkle the coated pecans evenly over the top of the pie filling.
  9. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any potential drips and place it into the preheated oven. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes.
  10. After 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the filling is set in the middle and the pecan topping is golden brown.
  11. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving. This allows the filling to fully set.

Notes

To prepare the mashed sweet potatoes, I recommend baking 2 to 3 medium sweet potatoes in their skins until they are very tender and soft. Once cooled slightly, peel off the skin and mash them thoroughly with a fork or potato masher until no lumps remain. Alternatively, you can peel and cut the sweet potatoes into chunks, then boil them until tender, draining well before mashing.
