Ignite Your Palate: How to Make Taco Stuffed Shells Extra Spicy

For those who love a little heat, customizing your Taco Stuffed Shells with an extra kick is incredibly simple and highly recommended. To truly elevate the spice level, start by opting for a ‘hot’ or ‘spicy’ variety of taco seasoning when preparing your ground beef filling. This foundational layer of heat will permeate every bite. Furthermore, consider incorporating finely diced jalapeños or serrano peppers into the meat mixture as it cooks, enhancing both flavor and fiery intensity. For a dynamic finish, serve your baked shells with a generous drizzle of your favorite hot sauce. We personally recommend Cholulu Hot Sauce, which offers a perfect balance of flavor and spice, making it our top choice for complementing Mexican-inspired dishes.

Mastering the Art: Expert Tips for Flawless Taco Stuffed Shells

Achieving perfectly cooked and flavorful Taco Stuffed Shells is easier than you think, especially with these insider tips:

  • Choose the Right Pasta: Always make sure to purchase jumbo pasta shells. Standard-sized shells won’t provide enough space for the generous and flavorful taco filling, making them challenging to stuff and resulting in a less satisfying bite.
  • Al Dente is Key: When boiling your pasta shells, cook them only to an al dente consistency. They will continue to cook and soften in the oven as they bake with the filling, so undercooking them slightly ensures they don’t become mushy.
  • Freezing for Future Meals: These shells are excellent for freezing! To do so, assemble them in a foil baking pan (no need to bake first). Cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap, then wrap again with aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. Freeze before baking. When you’re ready to cook, transfer the frozen dish to the refrigerator the night before to thaw partially. Bake as directed, adding an extra 10-15 minutes to the covered baking time if still slightly frozen.
  • Pepper Power: While our recipe calls for red bell pepper to add a touch of sweetness and vibrant color, feel free to substitute with green bell pepper for a slightly more robust, less sweet flavor profile.
  • Leaner Alternatives: For a lighter option, ground turkey can be seamlessly substituted for ground beef without compromising on flavor. Ensure you season it well to mimic the richness of beef.
  • Boost Your Veggies: Looking to sneak in more vegetables? Diced zucchini is an excellent addition to the ground beef mixture. It adds moisture and nutrients without altering the taco flavor profile significantly. Simply sauté it along with the onions and bell peppers.
  • Creamy Indulgence: For an extra layer of creaminess, consider mixing a small amount of cream cheese or sour cream into the ground beef mixture before stuffing the shells. This adds a delightful richness.
  • Cheese Varieties: Don’t limit yourself to just Mexican cheese blend. Experiment with sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, or even a smoked gouda for unique flavor combinations.

Taco Stuffed Shells are a magnificent blend of Mexican and Italian food. Jumbo pasta shells are stuffed with taco-seasoned ground beef, black beans, corn, salsa, and cheese.

Equipment

  • 9×13-inch baking dish
  • Large Nonstick Skillet

Ingredients

  • 1/2 box jumbo pasta shells, cooked and drained
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 medium yellow or sweet onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 (1-ounce) packet taco seasoning
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen or fresh corn,, cooked
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend, divided
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onion

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Place a large nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it browns. Once the beef starts to cook, add the diced onion and bell pepper. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the ground beef is fully browned and no pink remains, and the vegetables have softened. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the taco seasoning packet and cook for an additional minute, allowing the flavors to bloom. Remove the pan from the heat. Fold in the rinsed and drained black beans, cooked corn, salsa, and 1 cup of the shredded Mexican cheese blend until well combined.
  4. Carefully take each cooked jumbo pasta shell and fill it generously with the prepared taco meat mixture. Arrange the stuffed shells snugly in a single layer within the greased baking pan. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded Mexican cheese blend and the sliced green onions evenly over the top of the shells.
  5. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the dish to heat through. Uncover the dish and bake for another 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden brown. Let rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

Be sure to buy Jumbo pasta shells for adequate filling capacity.
Only cook the shells to al dente; they will finish cooking in the oven.
Ground turkey can be substituted for ground beef for a leaner option.
For a richer flavor, consider using a good quality, flavorful salsa.
Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
