These Pull-Apart Supreme Pizza Pinwheels are a true crowd-pleaser, making them a versatile addition to any meal or gathering. This is a recipe the entire family will adore, thanks to its familiar flavors and fun, shareable format. Their adaptability means they can be served in a multitude of ways, effortlessly transitioning from a delightful appetizer to a satisfying snack, or even a creative accompaniment to your main supper. Imagine them as the star of your next game day party, a perfect treat for a casual get-together with friends, or a quick and easy weeknight dinner solution that everyone will look forward to.
For an extra burst of flavor and a complete pizza experience, we highly recommend serving these pinwheels with a generous bowl of warm pizza sauce on the side for dipping. The warm, tangy sauce complements the savory fillings and gooey cheese beautifully, allowing each person to customize their dip level. Beyond pizza sauce, consider a side of ranch dressing for a creamy contrast, or even a spicy marinara for those who like a bit of heat. For a more substantial meal, pair them with a crisp green salad or a light soup. They’re also fantastic as a lunchbox treat, making school days a little more exciting. The possibilities are truly endless, ensuring these pinwheels will become a regular fixture in your culinary rotation.

One of the many reasons we adore Melissa’s recipes, and particularly these pizza pinwheels, is her knack for layering flavors without overcomplicating the process. Every ingredient used is not only carefully selected to contribute to the overall taste profile but is also readily available at your local grocery store. You won’t find yourself hunting for obscure items; instead, you’ll be able to whip up these fantastic pinwheels with everyday staples. This approach makes her recipes accessible and enjoyable for everyone, ensuring that delicious, home-cooked meals are always within reach. The simplicity of ingredients combined with the sophisticated blend of tastes is truly a hallmark of Melissa’s Southern-Style Kitchen.
These incredible rolls truly have it all. Each pinwheel is generously packed with a robust combination of savory Italian sausage, finely diced onion, vibrant green bell pepper, tender mushrooms, briny black olives, and classic mini pepperoni slices. This rich medley of toppings is perfectly encased with a generous amount of tangy pizza sauce and, of course, an abundance of luscious, melted cheese. What makes these pizza rolls an absolute dream to prepare is the smart use of premade pizza dough. This clever shortcut transforms what could be a lengthy process into an absolute breeze, allowing you to create a homemade-tasting treat with minimal effort and maximum deliciousness.
The moment you pull these golden pinwheels from the oven, you’ll be greeted by an irresistible aroma and the visual delight of so much gooey, melted cheese bubbling between the layers. The combination of crispy dough and warm, stretchy cheese creates a texture sensation that is simply divine. When you serve them, especially with an extra bowl of warm pizza sauce for dipping, be prepared for a friendly family competition over who gets the very last one. They’re that good—a testament to a recipe that perfectly balances convenience, flavor, and sheer indulgence, making them an unforgettable snack or appetizer.

Customize Your Pinwheels: Variations and Substitutions
One of the best features of this Pull-Apart Supreme Pizza Pinwheel recipe is its incredible flexibility. Pizza is inherently customizable, and these pinwheels are no exception. They are truly easy to tailor to your family’s preferences, dietary needs, or whatever ingredients you have on hand. Don’t be afraid to get creative and make them your own!
- Personalize Your Toppings: The “supreme” combination is fantastic, but feel free to omit any ingredients you don’t particularly enjoy. Not a fan of olives? Leave them out! Prefer more mushrooms? Double up! This recipe is a perfect canvas for your favorite pizza toppings. Consider adding other vegetables like finely diced bell peppers (red, yellow, or orange for color), spinach (sautéed and squeezed dry), or even a sprinkle of sun-dried tomatoes for an extra layer of flavor.
- Switch Up the Protein: While Italian sausage and pepperoni are classic, you can easily substitute or add other proteins. Cooked and crumbled ground beef, shredded rotisserie chicken, or even diced ham are excellent choices. For a vegetarian option, simply omit the meat and load up on extra vegetables and cheese. Plant-based sausage crumbles are also a fantastic alternative for those avoiding meat.
- Explore Different Cheeses: Mozzarella is a must for that classic stretch and melt, but consider blending it with other cheeses for added depth. A sprinkle of provolone, a sharp cheddar, or even a smoky gouda can elevate the flavor profile. A parmesan-romano blend can also add a delightful saltiness.
- Alternative Dough Options: If you don’t have pizza dough, or simply want to try something different, crescent roll dough works beautifully for a flakier, buttery pinwheel. Puff pastry sheets can also create an incredibly elegant and delicate version of these savory rolls. Just be mindful of baking times and temperatures, as these alternative doughs may cook faster.
- Adjust the Spice Level: The red pepper flakes add a subtle kick, which is perfect for many. However, if you prefer a milder flavor, feel free to leave them out entirely. Conversely, if you love heat, you can increase the amount of red pepper flakes or even add a pinch of cayenne pepper for an extra fiery twist.
- Herb and Seasoning Boost: Beyond Italian seasoning, consider adding fresh herbs like chopped basil or oregano to the filling mixture for a vibrant, aromatic boost. A dash of onion powder or smoked paprika can also enhance the overall flavor.
Recipe Tip for Perfect Pinwheels
For the most visually appealing and perfectly structured pinwheels, it’s crucial to roll the dough up as tightly as possible. A tight roll ensures that the filling remains securely inside and prevents gaps. When it comes to cutting, use a really sharp knife, preferably one with a thin blade, to slice the log into equal portions. A dull knife might flatten or tear the dough, leading to less uniform and less attractive pinwheels. If your knife tends to stick, lightly flouring it or running it under hot water and drying it between cuts can help.

Pull-Apart Supreme Pizza Pinwheels are loaded with Italian sausage, zesty pepperoni, fresh onion, vibrant peppers, savory mushrooms, and an abundance of gooey cheese! This classic supreme pizza flavor is made incredibly easy with convenient store-bought pizza dough, perfect for a quick appetizer or snack.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces sweet or spicy Italian sausage
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 1/2 cup seeded and diced green bell pepper
- 4 ounces mushrooms, roughly chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 13.8-ounce can refrigerated classic pizza crust (Pillsbury recommended)
- 1 1/2 cups pizza sauce, divided
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives, patted dry
- 1/3 cup sliced mini pepperoni
- 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly spray a 16-inch pizza pan with cooking spray or line with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a medium-sized skillet, heat a light drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, diced onion, green bell pepper, and chopped mushrooms. Season the mixture with the Italian seasoning, garlic salt, and red pepper flakes. Cook for approximately 10 minutes, or until the sausage is thoroughly browned and no pink remains, and vegetables are softened. Remove the skillet from the heat and carefully drain any excess grease, or spread the mixture onto a double layer of paper towels to absorb oil.
- Unroll the refrigerated pizza crust onto a lightly floured surface. Gently stretch or roll the dough into a roughly 12×16-inch rectangle. Evenly spread 1/2 cup of the pizza sauce over the entire surface of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Evenly distribute the crumbled sausage and vegetable mixture over the cheese, then arrange the sliced black olives and mini pepperoni on top. Finish by covering this layer with another 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
- Starting from one of the widest edges of the rectangle, begin to roll the dough tightly into a log. Once rolled, use a very sharp knife to carefully cut the log into 16 equal portions, creating the pinwheel shapes. If any of the pinwheels slightly unravel during cutting, simply rewrap and gently press them back together. Arrange the pinwheels side by side on the prepared pizza pan, starting in the center and forming a circular pattern. As they bake, the cheese will melt and the dough will expand, helping them adhere into a delicious pull-apart ring.
- Bake the pinwheels in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and puffy. At this point, carefully remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese and the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese over the top of the pinwheels. Return to the oven and continue baking for another 5 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly.
- Once baked, remove the pizza pinwheels from the oven. For an extra touch of flavor, sprinkle with additional grated Parmesan cheese before serving, if desired. Serve immediately with the remaining 1 cup of warm pizza sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy these hot, cheesy, and utterly delicious pull-apart treats!
