Transforming Classic Chicken Cordon Bleu into a Comforting Casserole
There’s nothing quite like a delicious, hearty casserole to bring comfort and warmth to your dinner table. We’ve elevated the flavor profile even further by incorporating a layer of sharp cheddar cheese and a delightful, crunchy Ritz cracker and butter topping. The result is an incredibly flavorful and satisfying meal that requires minimal effort.
Casseroles are a quintessential comfort food, renowned for their ease of preparation and their ability to feed a large family or group. This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole perfectly embodies that spirit, offering a complete meal in one dish. It’s the ideal solution for busy weeknights, potlucks, or when you simply crave a deeply satisfying, home-cooked meal without the fuss.
What Makes a Dish “Cordon Bleu”? Unpacking the Classic
The term “Cordon Bleu” is steeped in culinary tradition. Originating from France, it literally translates to “blue ribbon,” a designation historically used to signify food of the highest standard and excellence. Classically, Chicken Cordon Bleu is prepared by pounding a chicken breast thin, then rolling it around a slice of ham and Swiss cheese. This roulade is typically breaded and then fried or baked until golden and crispy, yielding a delicious, savory filling encased in tender chicken.
While the traditional method is undeniably elegant, it can be time-consuming. Our casserole version captures all the exquisite flavors of the classic dish – the tender chicken, the savory ham, and the creamy, melted Swiss cheese – but simplifies the preparation process dramatically. By layering these ingredients with a rich sauce and rice, then baking it to perfection, we create a dish that delivers the “blue ribbon” taste with incredible ease, making it accessible for any home cook.

Effortless Preparation: Utilizing Rotisserie or Leftover Chicken
One of the biggest advantages of this Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole recipe is its flexibility and convenience, particularly when it comes to the chicken component. For a truly expedited meal, a store-bought rotisserie chicken is your best friend. Its pre-cooked, flavorful meat saves significant preparation time, allowing you to assemble the casserole in a flash.
Alternatively, this recipe is an excellent way to repurpose leftover cooked chicken. Whether you have baked, grilled, or pan-fried chicken from a previous meal, simply dice it into bite-sized pieces. You’ll need approximately 4 cups of diced cooked chicken, which makes this an ideal recipe for using up odds and ends. Moreover, if you find yourself with leftover turkey or ham after a holiday feast like Thanksgiving, feel free to substitute them for the chicken and ham specified in the recipe. This adaptability not only reduces food waste but also creates a uniquely delicious and comforting post-holiday meal that everyone will appreciate.
The key here is cooked chicken, so don’t hesitate to use whatever you have on hand. This versatility ensures that a delectable Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is always within reach, even on the busiest of evenings.
Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Your Chicken Casserole
This rich and creamy Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole pairs wonderfully with a variety of side dishes that can complement its savory flavors and textures. For a touch of Southern charm and a burst of fresh green, consider serving it alongside Southern-Style Green Beans. Their tender texture and classic seasoning provide a fantastic contrast. If you prefer something vibrant and nutritious, Lemon Butter Broccoli offers a zesty brightness that cuts through the casserole’s richness.
To complete your comfort food spread, warm, fluffy Yeast Rolls are an absolute must. They are perfect for soaking up every last drop of the creamy sauce. For a lighter, refreshing counterpoint, a crisp garden salad with a generous drizzle of Creamy Italian Dressing provides a refreshing balance to the meal.
Beyond these suggestions, consider other simple vegetable sides like roasted asparagus, glazed carrots, or a simple side of steamed peas. The goal is to balance the hearty nature of the casserole with fresh, lighter elements or a delicious bread for dipping and enjoying every bit of this incredible dish.
The Ultimate Comfort Meal for Any Occasion
Beyond its delicious taste, this Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole holds a special place as a truly versatile and thoughtful meal. It’s an ideal choice when you need to bring a dish to someone special – whether it’s a new mother, a family navigating a challenging time, or a friend who simply needs a comforting home-cooked meal. Its broad appeal means it’s usually a hit with a wide range of ages and palates, ensuring that your thoughtful gesture is truly appreciated.
The harmonious combination of tender chicken, savory ham, and creamy, melted cheese is already an irresistible trio. However, the addition of a crunchy, buttery Ritz cracker topping elevates this casserole from simply good to absolutely unforgettable. This golden crust adds a delightful textural contrast and an extra layer of savory flavor that makes each bite a true pleasure. Paired with a simple green salad or a side of steamed vegetables, you have a complete, satisfying, and deeply comforting meal that is bound to bring joy and solace at the end of a long day.
Its ease of assembly also makes it a fantastic make-ahead option. You can prepare the casserole layers in advance, cover it, and refrigerate it, then simply pop it in the oven when you’re ready to bake. This convenience makes it a lifesaver for busy hosts or anyone looking to minimize last-minute cooking stress.

Customize Your Casserole: Creative Substitutions and Additions
One of the beauties of casserole recipes is their incredible flexibility, and this Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is no exception. Feel free to adapt it to your taste preferences or whatever ingredients you have on hand. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- **Add Some Veggies:** Boost the nutritional value and add more texture by incorporating vegetables. About one cup of steamed chopped broccoli, green beans, or even frozen peas (added during the last 10 minutes of baking) would be a fantastic addition. These vegetables blend well with the creamy sauce and add vibrant color.
- **Experiment with Cheese:** While Swiss cheese is traditional for Cordon Bleu, don’t hesitate to use different cheeses to alter the flavor profile. For a bolder, nuttier flavor, consider using grated Gruyere cheese instead of or in addition to Swiss. If Swiss cheese isn’t your favorite, sliced provolone cheese or shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese are excellent alternatives that offer a milder, meltier quality. A sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top of the Ritz cracker crust before baking can also add a delightful savory tang.
- **Vary the Topping:** If you don’t have Ritz crackers, other buttery crackers or even panko breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter can create a similar crispy topping. For a touch of herbs, mix a pinch of dried parsley or chives into the cracker crumbs.
- **Spice It Up (or Down):** A dash of garlic powder or onion powder can deepen the savory notes of the sauce. For a hint of spice, a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper could be added to the sauce, or a sprinkle of paprika over the topping for color and a subtle flavor.
These simple adjustments allow you to tailor the casserole to your family’s preferences, ensuring it becomes a regular favorite in your meal rotation.

- 4 cups cooked diced chicken
- 1 1/2 cups diced ham
- 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 6 ounces sliced Swiss cheese, cut into strips
- 4 ounces grated cheddar cheese
- 20 Ritz crackers, crushed
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Spoon cooked rice into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, spreading evenly.
- Top the rice layer with the diced chicken and diced ham.
- Evenly layer the Swiss cheese strips and grated cheddar cheese on top of the meat.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of chicken soup, milk, and chicken broth until smooth.
- Pour the soup mixture evenly over the cheese and meat layers.
- In a small bowl, mix together the crushed Ritz cracker crumbs and melted butter until well combined. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the casserole is hot, bubbly, and the topping is golden brown.
Notes
I like to use rotisserie chicken for convenience, but any cooked chicken can be used. This recipe is also great for using leftover turkey instead of chicken.
