These Western Barbecue Burgers are basted with rich barbecue sauce and generously topped with American cheese, savory grilled onions, and crispy bacon for an unforgettable flavor experience.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground chuck
  • 1/4 cup Kraft Barbecue Sauce,, any flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup Kraft Barbecue Sauce for basting
  • 2 sweet or yellow onions,, cut into 1/2-inch slices
  • Olive Oil
  • 6 slices American cheese
  • 12 slices bacon,, cooked
  • 6 buns
  • 6 lettuce leaves
  • 2 tomatoes,, sliced
  • pickle slices

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground chuck, 1/4 cup Kraft Barbecue Sauce (any flavor), garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined. Shape the mixture into 6 evenly sized patties. For best results, refrigerate the patties while you prepare the grill.
  • Preheat your gas grill to medium-high heat. Take the onion slices and lightly coat them with olive oil, then season with a pinch of salt and pepper. (Chef’s Note: To help keep the onion slices intact while grilling, you can insert a wooden skewer through each slice. Remember to soak wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling to prevent them from burning.)
  • Place the seasoned onion slices directly over the heat on the grill. Grill for approximately 3 minutes per side, or until they begin to soften and show some char marks. After grilling, move the onions to one side of the grill and reduce the heat on that side to low. Baste the grilled onions with Kraft Barbecue Sauce, allowing them to gently caramelize and absorb the smoky flavor. Remove from grill once they are tender and beautifully charred.
  • Lightly sprinkle the burger patties with additional salt and pepper just before placing them on the hot grill. Grill for 3 to 5 minutes on one side for a medium-rare to medium cook.
