An Unforgettable Culinary Journey: My Florida 30A Retreat

Earlier this month, I had the incredible opportunity to join nine other talented food bloggers on a truly fabulous retreat. It was an enriching experience filled with collaboration, inspiration, and, of course, exceptional food. Our vibrant group included Lindsay from Life, Love and Sugar, Paula from Call Me PMc, Kita from Pass the Sushi and Girl Carnivore, Liz from Floating Kitchen, Beth from Beth Cakes, Amanda from Heartbeet Kitchen, Ashley from Spoonful of Flavor, Justine from Cooking and Beer, and Danae from Recipe Runner. This gathering of creative minds and passionate palates took us to the breathtaking Watercolor Resort, nestled along Florida’s famed Scenic Highway 30A.

Discovering the Enchantment of Florida’s Scenic 30A

The 30A area of Florida has long been on my travel wish list. Ever since Coastal Living magazine featured one of their Ultimate Beach Houses in the charming town of Rosemary Beach, I’ve been captivated by its unique allure. The region’s distinctive architecture, characterized by quaint pastel-colored cottages and elegant coastal designs, immediately drew me in. Along 30A, you’ll find a string of picturesque beach communities, each possessing its own distinct personality and charm. From the bustling vibrancy of Seaside to the serene elegance of Alys Beach, and the laid-back luxury of Watercolor, this stretch of coastline offers an idyllic escape. It’s truly a dream destination for any vacationer seeking both relaxation and adventure.

The natural beauty of 30A is simply mesmerizing. The Gulf waters shimmer with an almost Caribbean-like hue, a stunning blend of emerald green and sapphire blue, while the sand is famously sugar-white and incredibly soft underfoot. It’s a sensory experience that instantly transports you to a state of pure tranquility. This incredible retreat was meticulously organized by my friend Ashley from Spoonful of Flavor. I must commend her exceptional talent; she could easily be one of the most gifted event planners in the Southeast. Every detail of our two-and-a-half-day itinerary, from delightful culinary experiences to engaging activities, was flawlessly executed, making the entire trip a seamless and memorable adventure.

Culinary Highlights: Dining in 30A

Among the many highlights of our retreat were the unforgettable dining experiences. We indulged in a fantastic breakfast at The Perfect Pig in Seaside, a local gem renowned for its incredible bacon and grits. The bacon was perfectly crispy, and the grits were creamy and flavorful—a true Southern comfort. I particularly savored a bacon and egg breakfast sandwich, generously coated in Parmesan cheese. It was an absolutely amazing dish, bursting with savory goodness that set a high bar for the rest of our meals.

Another culinary pinnacle was dinner at The Watercolor Inn. We were treated to a multi-course feast, each dish more exquisite than the last. The menu was a symphony of Southern-inspired elegance, featuring highlights such as Southern Deviled Eggs with Smoked Char Roe – a sophisticated twist on a classic. The Pan-Seared Gulf Black Grouper was flaky and perfectly cooked, showcasing the region’s fresh seafood. But the true showstopper was the Snake River Farms Eye of the Rib Eye, accompanied by rich White Truffle Mashed Potatoes. This Rib Eye was, without a doubt, the best I have ever tasted – tender, flavorful, and cooked to absolute perfection.

Beyond the lavish dinners, we also enjoyed a delightful smoothie breakfast, generously sponsored by Naturipe Berries and KitchenAid. It was the perfect refreshing start to another day of adventures and learning. My time at 30A was truly wonderful, reaffirming my belief that girls’ retreats should be a mandatory indulgence every few months. I’m already dreaming of my return to this enchanting part of Florida; there’s still so much more to explore and experience.

Crafting the Perfect German Chocolate Milkshake

But let’s circle back to the star of the show: this incredible German Chocolate Milkshake. To create this masterpiece, I employed my gorgeous new KitchenAid Blender. Don’t you just adore its vibrant Raspberry Ice color? This powerful blender made quick work of transforming simple ingredients into a smooth, creamy delight, tailor-made for German Chocolate lovers.

Delicious German Chocolate Milkshake with chocolate drizzle and whipped cream

My primary goal was to perfectly replicate the iconic flavors of a German Chocolate Cake, particularly the luscious, gooey coconut and pecan icing. An inspired thought struck me: why not incorporate premade Coconut Pecan Frosting directly into the milkshake? This genius shortcut, combined with rich chocolate ice cream and a touch of melted German chocolate, creates a milkshake that is bursting with authentic flavor.

The result is a super sweet milkshake, generously imbued with the distinct tastes of coconut and pecan, balanced by the deep notes of chocolate. It’s an easy yet incredibly impressive dessert that comes together in minutes. Just be mindful of the amount of frosting you add, as its sweetness can quickly intensify the drink. For an extra boost of coconut flavor and a delightful textural contrast, I often add a sprinkle of shredded coconut, which also makes for a beautiful garnish. The chewy texture of coconut combined with the satisfying crunch of pecans against the creamy backdrop of this milkshake is an absolute dream.
